Our history - timeline
Former Gaby Hardwicke staff in Devonshire Road, Bexhill.
1889 Dr Frederick Goodwin opens his own practice at Memorial Buildings, Hastings.
1892 Ralph Gaby joins Dr Goodwin in partnership.
1894 Dr Goodwin leaves the partnership.
1897 Dr Goodwin dies of heart disease in Boulogne, France, aged 34.
1899-1902 Ralph Gaby plays a key role in the movement to obtain the incorporation of Bexhill as a municipal borough.
1907-1917 Due to a temporary merger the firm is known as Gaby and Stapylton Smith.
1920 Ralph Gaby is a founder member of Hastings and District Law Society and becomes its first Honorary Secretary.
1921 Allen Hardwicke has been made a partner and the firm is known as Gaby & Hardwicke. Mr Hardwicke manages the Bexhill office and Mr Gaby the Hastings office. For a short time in the 1920s there is also an office at Ninfield.
1927 Upon Ralph Gaby’s death, Reginald Wynne Evans-Vaughan becomes a partner and the firm is re-titled Gaby Hardwicke & Evans-Vaughan.
1930 William Osmond Bubear becomes a partner and the firm is re-titled Gaby, Hardwicke, Evans-Vaughan & Bubear.
1936 Jack Baldry becomes a partner and the firm is now known as Gaby, Hardwicke & Co. By this time the firm's Bexhill office is at 2 Eversley Road.
1940 A Luftwaffe bomb falls within the vicinity of our 2 Cambridge Road Hastings office, which is damaged by the blast. The office is vacated and a makeshift Hastings branch is set up at employee H. E. Thomas’s home, at 190 Sedlescombe Road North.
1945 Jack Baldry rejoins Allen Hardwicke in partnership. Later two new partners, George Herbert and Jethro Arscott, join the firm.
1965 Allen Hardwicke dies aged 83 while still a practising solicitor. Jack Baldry leaves the partnership and the remaining partners, Jethro Arscott and George Herbert, continue the firm.
1986 George Herbert dies at his Eversley Road office, aged 60; Jethro Arscott retires from the partnership and John Midgley becomes Senior Partner.
1995 Peter Taylor becomes Managing Partner as the firm merges with Yearwood & Griffiths.
2005 An arson attack on Good Friday devastates the Hastings office and more than 90 fire fighters battle the blaze. Our Hastings staff move to a temporary location while the office is repaired.
2009 John Midgley, our acting Senior Partner, dies aged 67. Peter Taylor continues as Managing Partner.
2012 Peter Taylor moves to a senior consultancy role and David Young becomes Senior Partner.
2014 David Getty becomes Managing Partner and Gary Winterton becomes Director of Finance & Administration.
